Just Win Not Draw (7/31)

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, BOY SCOUTS, CYPRESS, CA - Co-Host B1-Australia needed to win to guarantee a spot in the Round of 16 while B4-Canada needed just a draw so it was AUS coming on hot getting a VAR assisted goal in the 9' en route to a 4-0 win, eliminating the defending Olympic Champions as B3-Nigeria just needed to lose not as badly as CAN, and drew B2-Rep of Ireland, 0-0 to clinch 2nd.  

Earlier, C2-Japan needed to win to win Group C while C1-Spain just needed a draw or win.  JPN let ESP have all the passing (925 to 625) and possession (68%-21%) and on their first three attacks/counterattacks into the final third, great finishing put JPN up 3-0 before the half.  A great 4th goal after wresting the ball from the sideline made the final score 4-0 as JPN finished the group with 11 goals with no goals allowed.  C3-Zambia, ranked #77, broke through with 3 goals in beating C2-Costa Rica, 3-1.  ZAM's second goal off a PK was the WWC's 1000th goal scored.  

I really needed to get the stink of watching the LA Galaxy blow a late 1-0 and lose 2-1 off an own goal and deflected blocked shot to Vancouver as LAG blew chance after chance.  JPN, had just 8 shots, 6 on goal, and scored 4.  Each one was just a breakaway where you saw the play build up (like most times) but with precision finishing.  Think of JPN's slash line of 8/6/4 compared to ESP's first match of 46/14/2 (one was an own goal).  Efficient.  Wore my 2012 JPN home jersey, the women's one with the pink line ("All Support for Japan"), 2011 WWC winners patch, and gold star while admiring the beautiful dusk after that crappy game in Carson.

E1-USA only needs to draw to advance... not a good omen (see CAN and ESP above) and if they do win but lose on goal differential to E3-Netherlands (let's hope E2-Vietnam's 5'-5" GK keeps playing like a superstar), a #1 v #3 R16 matchup with G1-Sweden is a high possibility.

Group C concluded with Kds911 (3rd-Tied, 38 pts) the only one to pick both JPN and ZAM to win and with 46 having ESP in R16 and 45 JPN, the only one to pick up all 8 points in Group C.  31 went 0-2 and three just got ESP or JPN, but not both.  44 got both.  Leader Eggman 2 (3rd-T) and last place Tiny Destroyer (47th, 24) each only got 3 of 8 points.

Group B concluded with BigRedMessiUSA (19th-T, 35) and More$ (3rd-T) the only two to get both AUS's win (picked by 20) and CRC-NGR draw (6).  23 went 0-2.  All 47 had AUS (barely) in their R16 but no one had NGR (45 lost CAN), meaning BigRedMesssiUSA and More$ got 5 of 8 points in Group B while 23 got 3 of 8.  

Combined, Hawkeye and Vlatko Better Win are tied for first with 39 points with six tied for 3rd with 38.  

USA Qualifies, Draws Jolly 'ole England

The US Men's National Team tried, but only lost 2-0 Costa Rica, where only a 6-goal loss would have pushed to 4th place in the CONCACAF Octagonal, and into a playoff with New Zealand.  The USA (#15 in the world) is back in the World Cup and today, knew most of their fate.  They were drawn into England's (#5) Group B along with one of Asia's top teams, IR Iran (#21), and the European playoff winner (either Wales (#18), Scotland (#39), or Ukraine (#27)).

USA were able to get into Pot 2 (next 8 best teams, Pot 1 was host Qatar (#51) and the top 7 teams) and therefore avoid two major powers (such as Group C with Argentina (#4) & Mexico (#9) and Group E with Spain (#7) & Germany (#12)).  Last time ('14... sigh, the '18 debacle still hurts), they were in Pot 3 and drew Germany & Portugal (but still escaped to the Round of 16).  Canada (#38), despite winning the octagonal, was in Pot 3 and will have to face Belgium (#2) & Croatia (#16).  

So the USA has a good chance to get out of Group B (not the easiest, not the hardest) and will need to prove themselves again.  USA has made the Round of 16 the past two times (sigh, no '18).

More importantly, the 7th HWCI World Cup pool begins in November!  Get your ten bucks ready!

Save! (6/24)

For the second time this tourney, there was heartache on a missed PK (CHIvTHA for spot in R16).  With 2F-Sweden scoring first in the second half, thanks to... wait for it... VAR, 2E-Canada had a chance to tie with a penalty kick.  Instead of 2nd all-time scorer Christine Sinclair, it was Janine Beckie and her shot in the lower left was saved in the 69'.  VAR kept CAN in the game as a potential PK opportunity was negated by a SWE offside in the 81'.  Both teams only managed two shots on goal each and SWE held on to win 1-0 to advance to their 4th QF.  CAN, ranked #5, had high hopes of doing better than last time when as hosts, they made the QF.  SWE, which rested players to finish 2nd in Group F, had just enough to prevail. 

Sea of Orange (6/15)

E2-Netherlands scored twice in the second half to secure a spot in the Round of 16 with a 3-1 win over E4-Cameroon in front of a large orange-clad partisan crowd.  Valenciennes is less than 200 miles from Amersterdam with multiple ways to travel (being it's Europe).  E1-Canada also scored twice in the second half to advanced to the Knockout Stage with a 2-0 win over E3-New Zealand.  NZL became the first team to not record a shot on goal and the CAN GK has only faced 1 shot on goal in the two matches (making the save).  That should change as CAN and NED battle it out for first.

Like Winning a Championship (6/10)

After seeing 21 goals in the first 7 matches, today saw just one in two matches.  In the biggest surprise of the tournament, D4-Japan was held to a zero-zero draw by #37 ranked D3-Argentina.  While ARG had no shots in the first half, did not have a shot on goal until the 73', had zero corner kicks, and never got into JPN's box until the 65', ARG's defense formation held firm for the whole 90 minutes.  JPN was too patient and never had many runs at ARG's defense, opting to play the ball around (sort of like men's Spain team did in '18 WC) and had just eight shots.  ARG celebrated like they had not only won but won a championship.  When you're in the shadow of the men's team, a tie is a great result.  It's a shame that the largest crowd since the opening match (1st >20,000 at 25,055) saw this dud.  D1-England leads the Group and D2-Scotland's chances have greatly improved with this result.

E1-Canada had lots of possession but only managed one goal against #46 E2-Cameroon in the lowest attended event at 10,710 fans.  But as always, getting the result of 3 points is the goal in the first match as 89% of WWC teams who won their first match, advanced to the Knockout Stage including all 9 teams in 2015.

The Asian Football Confederation is off to a

United vs Morocco... And the winner is...

USA (and Canada), USA!, USA (and Mexico)!  Politics took a back seat to cash as for the first time, all FIFA eligible members voted on the next host of the World Cup, this one an expanded 48-team event in 2026 (not in the winter!).  134 of the 199 (of 211) nations cast their ballot for "United 2026" with Morocco still managing to get an impressive 65 votes.  USA (and Canada and Mexico) had gotten the vote fast-tracked but Morocco still was able to sneak in on the eve of the deadline. 

The good news is Canada will automatically qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986 (assuming they don't get in 2022) and the USA won't have to recycle Sampson/Bradley/Arena/Klinsmann as coach to save qualifying in 2025.  Mexico will continue to qualify and continue to not make it past the Round of 16 which it has done since 1990.

With 44 entries, we may actually get close to our record 75 set last time in 2014.  Hmmmm...  Remember, the deadline is 8 am PDT Thursday!  I may not get to check for errors so I will be emaing some of you if you accidentally filled out the Round of 16 bracket incorrectly.  No worries!

     FRENCH BLOW OPPORTUNITY, HOSTS' COMBACK FALLS SHORT
Spermicidal WFC remains in first but loses champ Canada; Thecomebacker guaranteed money

EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt) -- Wide Left.  That will be what 1F-France remembers as they bookended the match vs 1B-Germany with wide open misses wide left from the lovely and humbled Louisa Necib in the first minute and a Wondo! (a shot that is ten times harder to miss than make) by Gaetane Thiney three minutes from the end of extra time (117').  Necib's slightly deflected shot gave FRA the lead in the 64' and they tried to hold on but a GER cross in the box inadvertently touched the arm of Amel Majri in the 83' (really, tough but correct call, while in the 29' FRA did not get the benefit of a two-breasted handball like CHN got vs NZL).  Celia Sasic converted GER's 13th consecutive PK (spoiler: it won't be broken today) to send the match into extra time.  In the first PK shootout this year, both teams converted on their first four PKs.  Sasic then converted GER's 5th PK (and the team's 18th straight, incredible) but sub Claire Lavogez, who when you saw her take a really deep breath was never a good sign, weak shot was saved by GER's captain Nadine Angerer and GER wins the first battle of the titans with a match vs titan 1D-USA next.

     NO SEPP, NO ESPN, NO GRASS, NO NORTH KOREA, NO PROBLEM!

Our first-ever Women's World Cup pool extremely delayed; new deadline Sunday 10 a.m. PDT

LEXINGTON PARK, MD (smt) -- With the popularity of women's soccer growing, FIFA has decided to stunt the growth by dominating the headlines with major scandals spanning several World Cups and the election then sudden resignation of Sepp Blatter (though it may not happen to next year... what kind of resignation is that?  Why not just say he'll resign and we'll get a new FIFA president in four years) and "experimenting" not with an U-20 or minor tournament, but THE Women's World Cup by playing all matches onturf, not grass (U-17 WCs have been played on "turf" as early as 2003).  And Fox will also be "experimenting", claiming this to be a dress rehearsal for the 2018 Men's World Cup in televising its first major tournament after outbidding ESPN.  But kudos to Fox for trying to emulate ESPN with nightly pre and post shows, hiring Heather Mitts, and getting their Fox Sports Go app out there to watch matches on your phone or tablet (apparently with optional views as well, such as a 360 channel and Tactical view channel). 

But on to positive news as after a highly successful WWC in Germany four years ago where
