Unforced Errors (8/6)

HOME, CA - Half the quarterfinal field is set and it will be without '95 champion Norway, 2-time champion ('03 and '07) champion Germany, and now, without 4-time champion ('91, '99, '15, and '19) 2E-USA who were ousted 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout to 1G-Sweden.  Only '11 champ 1C-Japan is still alive.  There was no switch to turn on as USA went the last 238 minutes without a goal and missed four penalties (3 in the PSO).  They played much better against #3 SWE and lost in the most bizarre way, a goal line technology on the last kick indicating the entire ball crossed the line by a hair, giving SWE the win.

For me, tie goes to the runner so even if you can't see the hair between the ball and line, I'm good calling it a goal. USA outshot SWE 21-8 but couldn't get it past GK Zecira Musovic, who made 11 saves but ironically, none in the 7-round penalty shootout, because the U.S. completely missed the goal in 3 of their last 4 kicks.  Bizarre.  

Who didn't miss for the U.S.?  Alyssa Naeher who had one save and scored one goal in the PSO.  The bright spot for the Americans is the defense as they limited SWE to just 3 CKs (SWE had 4 goals off corners) but geez, why is a SWE free kick near the mid-field circle so much more dangerous and nerve-wrecking than a Megan Rapinoe corner kick or free kick outside the box.  Poor set piece deliveries and skying high a penalty kick will be the last moments of her stellar WWC career.  

An entertaining first half with saves galore saw 1E-Netherlands get two fortunate goals, one off a rebound and one that went through the GK's hands to make the 2-0 win more comfortable than it should be.  This was the first time 2G-South Africa didn't take the lead (or score) but tried in having more shots (14-12) and shots on goal (7-5) with just 27% possession.  RSA's Thembi Kgatlana had 5 of her 7 shots saved by NED's GK.

Of course, by not winning their group, the SWEvUSA was a 2 am PDT kickoff vs a 7 pm kickoff (NEDvRSA).  And of course, this was the one game the past two days going to extra time, making it a 3-hour game.  Wore my red/white/blue 2014 USA away jersey while casting to my brand new 3-laser short throw projector upstairs (had to move down to my OLED since my son was sleeping upstairs.

34 had SWE and 9 had NED making the quarters but 46 lost USA (including 26 who pegged them as champions).  43 went 1-1 with 4 going 0-2.  No change at the top with Kds911-2 in first (77 pts) and More$ is second (76).  Tiny Destroyer still in last (48).

Finally, I have the possibilities table.   With 11 matches left, just 15 entries have been eliminated, leaving 32 vying for one to the top 4 prize spots.  We don't have enough entries to do a Bonus but should be an interesting finish.  17 can still win first, despite USA (picked by 26), GER (6), and BRA (1) out.  ENG (5), ESP (5), FRA (2), and SWE (2) are still in it.  Leader Kds911-2 has the best chance to win the pool (18.5%) and win money (52.5%).  Of those who can't win the pool, 3am Down Under (22nd-Tied, 69) has the best chance to win money (12.6%).  Flying Elvi is tied for 10th (73) but can't win the pool while GenX99er is tied for 28th but can still be champion.  Panama Red and The Ghost of Mia Hamm each have 67 pts (25th-T) but are eliminated while, ironically, Rapinoe's Last Stand is tied for 39th (62) but can still finish 2nd.

USA WINS 4TH TITLE SHUTTING OUT NEWBIE NETHERLANDS
From the Pubs! wins the pool as Futbol Fabone Dix takes 3rd for second time

SANTA CLARA, CA (smt) [MATCHDAY 25] -- 1E-Netherlands had a successful first half, not allowing 1F-USA to score (much less in the first 12 minutes as in their previous six matches) and had a couple of promising counters.  But the USA came out roaring in the second half but couldn't capitalize (thanks to NED GK Sari van Veenendaal who had 8 saves) until a reckless high kick to Alex Morgan was reviewed by VAR and a PK was awarded.  Megan Rapinoe put away the PK for her 6th goal and then 8 minutes later Rose Lavelle scored her 3rd goal of the tourney as USA cruised to a 2-0 win in front of a sellout crowd of 57,900 in Lyon.  Rapinoe's goal actually gave her the Golden Boot as she played less minutes than Morgan (6 goals and 3 assists each).  USA wins back-to-back titles (matching GER's '03/'07) and their 4th title (two more than GER) as well as their 4th straight major tournament win ('14 Concacaf Women's Championship/'15 WWC/'18 CWC). 

Coach Jill Ellis is the first to win two WWC titles and she actually did a good job, making adjustments when necessary and managing a star-studded roster.  Her defensive play after scoring against FRA was a good move IMHO, dealing with the heat and humidity and pro-FRA crowd, not a cowardly one.  In every match, the USA was the strongest and fittest in that last 5-10 minutes of a match sealing three one-goal wins.  I still don't think we know how good GK Alyssa Naeher is yet but that's for another day.  USA relied on the vets so much that before Lavelle's goal, the previous 7 were by "old-timers" Rapinoe (5), Morgan, and Press.  Ignoring the 13-0 opening win, 10 of the last 12 were by veterans (Lavelle and Lindsey Horan the lone exceptions) plus one own goal that was created by another 3-time vet, Tobin Heath.  As the mantle is handed down to the new class who will have more pressure on getting the three-peat, I will savor the dominance the USA women had in this tournament.

Start: USA is going for their 4th WWC title and are heavy favorites (as high as 5 to 1) and hold the CONCACAF Women's Championship '18 as well.  NED is in the Final in just their 2nd year in the WWC and hold the UEFA EURO Women's Championship '17.  Both go for the Double.  USA has scored in the first 12 minutes in all 6 matches while NED has scored 6 goals (including 4 game-winners) in the 75' or later.  Alex Morgan leads the Golden Boot with 6 goals (3 assists) with Megan Rapinoe behind at 5 goals (3 assists).  USA has 24 goals (record is 25 by '91 USA and '03 GER).  USA has won a record 11 straight WWC matches while NED has won 9 straight overall (6 this WWC) and 12 straight tourney matches ('17 EURO, '19 WWC).  While UEFA dominance and getting 7 of 8 QF teams in, NED is the first UEFA team in the final since '07 (GER).  USA 6-1-0 vs NED ('91).

Current total goals tiebreaker is 3 (SWE 2, ENG 1).  If NED pulls off the biggest upset in WWC history, then UncleChimps needs the total goals in this match to be 3 goals or less while Tom J wants 4 or more (for battle for 3rd/4th).  The goals count only in regulation or Extra Time, not the Penalty Shootout.  From the Pubs! wins the pool if USA wins and THE GAMBLER 1 wins the pool if NED wins.  UncleChimps, Futbol Fabone Dix and Pazzo Americano win 2nd/3rd/4th if USA wins and From the Pubs! gets 2nd if NED wins.

1':  Funny that the start the match with PA doing a countdown for the fans.  USA Rapinoe starts so it's the deadly combo of Heath-Morgan-Rapinoe.

10':  Early yellow for NED who's been a little sloppy.

13': NED survives the first 13 minutes, first time USA has not scored this early.  NED also playing with one less day's rest and played 30 extra minutes in the SF.  No shots for either side yet.

17':  Neat CK play by USA but results in no shot.  Temps in the high 80s.  USA has had several drives into the box but the crosses haven't connected.  The NED forward line has not had the explosive spark expected though they have scored six goals.  NED has just scored twice in the first half.

Back to Back Brace (6/28)

The gameplan for the U.S.:  Score earlier.  For the 5th time, the 1F-USA scored in the first 12 minutes.  They will play D1-England, who has scored in the first 15 minutes 4 times.  Megan Rapinoe scored two goals for the second straight match in helping USA beat host 1A-France, 2-1, in front of 45,595 fans with a nice contingent of Americans.  Rapinoe's first goal in the 5' was a free kick hit hard towards goal that went through everyone, including between FRA defender Amandine Henry's legs into the net.  The second was a great sequence in the 65' started by the banged up Alex Morgan to Tobin Heath who crossed the ball behind most players except for the charging in Rapinoe who had a clinical finish.  FRA did manage to pull one back off a free kick to the tall Wendie Renard in the 81' but the U.S. did a great job controlling the ball after that, especially in the 5 minutes of stoppage time.  FRA continues to fall short, losing in the quarterfinals for the 5th straight major tournament ('13 EURO, '15 WWC, '16 Olympics, '17 EURO).  While the men's '98 team won the WC and the '16 team reached the final as hosts, the FRA women hoped to duplicate that result at home.

Save! (6/24)

For the second time this tourney, there was heartache on a missed PK (CHIvTHA for spot in R16).  With 2F-Sweden scoring first in the second half, thanks to... wait for it... VAR, 2E-Canada had a chance to tie with a penalty kick.  Instead of 2nd all-time scorer Christine Sinclair, it was Janine Beckie and her shot in the lower left was saved in the 69'.  VAR kept CAN in the game as a potential PK opportunity was negated by a SWE offside in the 81'.  Both teams only managed two shots on goal each and SWE held on to win 1-0 to advance to their 4th QF.  CAN, ranked #5, had high hopes of doing better than last time when as hosts, they made the QF.  SWE, which rested players to finish 2nd in Group F, had just enough to prevail.

22 entries from 19 people in inaugural Women's WC pool

EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt) -- B1-Germany showed why it is the #1 ranked team scoring 5 goals in each half in a 10-0 rout of the lowest-ranked team (#67) in the tournament, B2-Ivory Coast.  Fellow group-mate B3-Norway pulled off a 4-0 rout of their own.  As one of eight teams to debut in the World Cup, the second-lowest ranked team (#53) C3-Cameroon put up 3 in each half in their 6-0 rout of the third-lowest ranked team (#48) C4-Ecuador.  Three of Cameroon's six goals came off the PK spot as six (in 7 tries) of the 40 goals scored in the tourney thus far have come from the spot.  The two finalists from '11 (C1-Japan, D1-USA) struggled but came away with victories while the host (A1-Canada) needed a stoppage time PK for their win.  CONCACAF went undefeated as in addition to CAN and USA's wins, E4-Costa Rica and F4-Mexico picked up draws versus E3-Spain and F3-Colombia, respectively.  A3-Netherlands and title contenders E1-Brazil and F1-France picked up wins as well while D4-Nigeria came back twice to tie D3-Sweden 3-3.

After the first couple of 1-0 matches, the last 10 matches saw 38 goals (and no nil-nil ties thus far) despite the first six matches ending with one team shutout.  Group D (the Group of Death) is the only group where all teams have scored at least one goal, with 3 of them scoring three.  The eight newcomers to the World Cup went 2-4-2 (head-to-head: CMR won vs ECU and ESP and CRC played to a tie) while the 7 teams who have made all 7 World Cups went 5-0-2 (head-to-head: SWE and NGA played to a tie).
