Fierce Competition (6/30)

The top dogs were in play today in UEFA vs CONMEBOL showdowns and first we got a power matchup between 1C-France and their young stars and 2D-Argentina featuring Messi.  In a wild match, FRA scored first on a PK but then ARG scored twice to take the lead.  But in a 11-minute span, 19-year old Kylian Mbappe, who was everywhere on the pitch, drawing fouls and the penalty, followed Benjamin Pavard's wicked strike to tie the match with two goals in 5 minutes.  ARG managed to get one goal back in stoppage time off a great Messi cross but it was too little too late as FRA held on 4-3.  FRA scored on all 4 shots on goal.

In another power matchup, 1A-Uruguay and 2B-Portugal faced off.  7 minutes after
POR tied the match, Edinson Cavani scored his 2nd of the match to lead URU to a 2-1 win sending Roanldo out of the tournament.  In both matches, the losing team deep in stoppage time got into scuffles which wasted a lot of precious time with Ronaldo getting a yellow in 90'+3 which meant he would have missed the Quarterfinals had POR advanced.  POR's goal was the first URU has allowed this tournament.

As 71 entries were guaranteed a Quarterfinalist (either FRA or ARG), only 5 did not get either FRA or URU including Ilvecchio who lead nearly all the Group Stage but now has fallen to 42nd-T (68).  29 picked URU and 72 had FRA with 26 getting both.  Kds911 now has a 3-point lead (83) over EEChick1400 and TheComeBacker.

Quarterfinalists (Pts - (GD - GF))
URU 12 (6 - 7)
FRA 10 (3 - 7)

Eliminated (Pts - (GD - GF))
POR 5 (0 - 6)
ARG 4 (-3 - 6)
